Landscape Maintenance: Winter
Winter might bring chilly mornings and shorter days, but it’s far from downtime in the garden. In fact, winter is the perfect season to set the foundation for lush, healthy growth in spring.
At Insight Landscapes, we believe every season offers the chance to nurture and improve your outdoor space. Whether you’re keeping things neat or preparing for a new landscape project, here are our top winter garden maintenance tips to keep your landscape in great shape through the cooler months.
WINTER PRUNING
With deciduous trees bare and many plants dormant, winter is the ideal time to prune. You can easily see the structure of your plants, allowing you to remove dead or crowded growth and shape them for healthy spring regrowth.
Here’s what to focus on:
Natives: Wait until they’ve finished flowering before pruning.
Hedges: Photinias, viburnums and murrayas can be trimmed towards the end of winter.
Deciduous fruit trees: Apples, pears, stone fruits and grapevines should all be cut back now.
Roses and summer-flowering shrubs: Prune fuchsias, crepe myrtles and roses — but leave spring bloomers until later.
Hydrangeas: Remove last season’s flowering stems to encourage new growth.
STAY ON TOP OF PESTS
Pests might be quieter in winter, but they’re still around — often hiding and waiting for warmer weather. Stay one step ahead:
- Remove loose bark around fruit trees to eliminate hibernating pests like moth cocoons.
- Continue monitoring and treating for fruit fly (they don’t take winter off!).
- Spray winter vegetables — like cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts — with eco-friendly insect sprays such as pyrethrum to protect against aphids.
LAWN CARE IN THE COOLER MONTHS
Lawns may slow down in winter, but they still need attention. One of the best things you can do now is aerate.
- Use a garden fork or mechanical aerator to punch holes into compacted soil — allowing oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the roots.
- Consider applying a light top dressing (compost + soil + nutrients) to prepare the lawn for vigorous spring growth.
- Avoid walking on soggy lawn areas to prevent soil compaction and root damage.
MAKE THE MOST OF THE SEASON
Winter is also a great time to tackle bigger jobs that are harder to manage in summer heat — like landscaping, mulching, hardscaping, or planting trees and structural shrubs.
Bonus tip? Just a few minutes in the garden each day can boost your mood, improve your outdoor space, and keep your landscape looking loved all winter long.
